Over the past few years, Naltrexone pills have become well-known for being used to treat additions to opioids and alcohol in patients. While this is the most common use for these pills, there are in fact a good few other conditions that they can be used to treat – provided that the treatment has been prescribed by a doctor or health care provider and that the patient’s condition will be monitored over the long term as well.
Treating Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Various studies have revealed that when lower dose Naltrexone pills are used, they can be successful in treating patients who are suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). During 1 study, 8 patients who had Crohn’s Disease were given Naltrexone pills and all 8 of them experienced relief in that fewer symptoms were experienced and within a matter of 2 – 3 weeks, they experienced no symptoms whatsoever. In addition, the patients showed no symptoms of the disease for periods of between 2 months and a few years after taking the Naltrexone pills.
Can Assist in Fighting Cancer
There have been cases where Naltrexone pills have been successful in helping to fight various forms of breast, bladder, colorectal, liver, lung, and thyroid and throat cancers. Other forms of cancer that have sometimes responded to this treatment include ovarian, prostate, renal cell and uterine cancers.
Some of the patients who were treated with Naltrexone pills had initially been classified as being terminal cases. However, after this treatment was administered, they went on to live a lot longer than expected. A study that comprised of just over 400 cancer patients saw approximately 25% of them experience a reduction in the size of tumors as well.
Assisting Patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases
Patients who suffer from degenerative illnesses like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s can sometimes benefit from the use of Naltrexone pills. However, in these instances, it is crucial that the treatment be started as early as possible, as this will help slow the overall progression of these conditions substantially – unfortunately, the Naltrexone pills are not able to reverse any degeneration or deterioration that has already taken place.
With regards to Parkinson’s, the Naltrexone pills have the ability to halt the progression of the condition, and over time, the patient’s existing symptoms will begin to subside. Overall however, patients suffering from these 2 conditions tend to experience better behavior, moods and emotions while on this treatment.
Treating Patients with Autism
A study carried out that involved a group of autistic children noted that significant behavioral improvements were experienced as shortly as 30 minutes after they had been given low dose Naltrexone pills. The medication was also shown to help increase the verbal production, while also reducing the various forms of autistic stereotypes such as repetitive behavior. Other studies have revealed that autistic children can also experience improvements in overall mood, behavior and concentration levels after being given low dose Naltrexone pills.
Helping to Improve Symptoms of PTSD
A few studies have been carried out that involved administering naltrexone pills to patients who were suffering from PTSD. One study revealed that 11 out of the 15 patients who took part experienced an array of positive effects, such as a clearer overall perception of their lives and emotions. In addition, the patients also reported that their overall feelings of self-esteem improved significantly as well.
Reduce Nausea in Trauma Patients
In cases where Naltrexone pills are used in conjunction with morphine on patients who have experienced trauma to any parts of their upper or lower extremities, it helps reduce any feelings of nausea that the patient may be experiencing as a result of the trauma or treatments they may be receiving. It’s important to note here though, that the pills were not able to reduce the amount of pain experienced by the patients.
Although Naltrexone pills can be used to treat a substantial variety of conditions, it is crucial for patients to ensure that they always follow their doctor or health care provider’s advice regarding dosages. Dosages should never be increased without approval from a medical professional. Failure to adhere to this advice can result in kidney or liver damage occurring over time, both of which are irreversible.
